MasterCard announced recently that MAPP (MasterCard Automated Point of Sale Program) will be taken into operation in some 500 specially marked taxi cabs in New York City by the end of the year. MAPP works with standard point-of-sale equipment and uses RAM Mobile Data's Mobitex network for wireless data communications.

For passengers the benefits are speed and convenience. Creditcard verification over the Mobitex network using MAPP typically takes about seven seconds.
