Mobitex is already widely used in public transport and has increased profitability whilst improving service in many organizations. Today there are literally hundreds of solutions readily available that use Mobitex as the wireless carrier.
An overall traffic management system built on real-time database access, gives traffic controllers full contact with all parts of the system. When drivers are equipped with Mobitex terminals, traffic controllers are able to send written messages from their computers to each vehicle, providing information about e.g. delays and traffic jams. The system normally includes AVL (automatic vehicle location), which allows controllers to continuously trace and project a vehicle's location, speed and direction. Also, a number of taxi companies use Mobitex for fleet management and vehicle dispatch thereby increasing customer service and generating more revenues for drivers.
Mobitex offers end-to-end solutions and turnkey applications for public transport. Based on industry standards and using off-the-shelf components wherever possible, these solutions have been designed to meet the specific requirements of the public transport sector. Terminals may be vehicle-mounted units that interface to an onboard computer and equipment for automatic vehicle location, or integrated units installed at terminals and major connection points displaying continuously updated arrival and departure times.
